भाषाकोविद 

सर्वच मुलं जन्मतःच भाषातज्ञ असतात. हे वाक्य वाचून दचकलात? मला सांगा, जगातल्या सात हजार भाषांमधली आपल्या वाट्याला आलेली कुठलीही भाषा मुलं किती सहजपणे शिकतात. ना त्यांना कोणी बाराखडी शिकवतं, ना व्याकरण, तरिही ते सहज शिकतात. 

खूप वर्ष यावर काम केल्यावर शास्त्रज्ञांना लक्षात आलंय की मुलांची भाषा ग्रहण करण्याची पद्धत ही मोठ्या माणसांपेक्षा वेगळी असते. ही क्षमता सहाव्या- सातव्या वर्षापर्यंत टिकून राहाते. आणि ह्या काळात मुलांचा अजून एखाद्या नवीन भाषेशी संपर्क आला, तर हा काळ वाढतो. मुलं मग तीही भाषा त्यांच्या विशेष पद्धतीनेच शिकतात. 

तिसऱ्या महिन्यांत दृष्टी धरायला लागलेलं बाळ, त्याला सांभाळणाऱ्याच्या नजरेला नजर मिळवून हुंकार द्यायला लागतं. तोंडाने फुर्र करून, हसून निरनिराळे आवाज काढायला लागतं.

पाचव्या महिन्यांत स्वर व्यंजनाची जोडी जमवायला लागतं. जस की, बाबा, काका, मामा. आपल्या हावभावांचा उपयोग करायला लागतं. जसं की, हात पुढे करून 'मला उचल'. आठव्या- नवव्या महिन्यांचा सुमार हा अर्थहीन बडबडीचा असतो. आवाजाचे चढउतार, टोन पकडण्याचा त्यांचा प्रयत्न असतो.

यानंतर एक किंवा दोन शब्दांची वाक्यं जमायला लागतात. पण त्यांना काय हवंय आणि काय नकोय ते शब्द आणि हावभावांची सांगड घालून ते नक्कीच सांगू शकतात. 

ह्यात मदत होते ती आजूबाजूला माणसं बोलत असतात त्याची. ते सर्व बोलणं, मुलं कान देऊन ऐकत असतात. साठवत असतात. आणि त्याची नक्कल करत असतात. भाषा शिकायची त्यांची हीच पद्धत असते.

मुलांचे भाषाशिक्षण सुलभ व्हावे, असं वाटत असेल तर त्यांच्याशी खूप बोला. बोलताना सुस्पष्ट, ठासून, अक्षर आणि शब्द सुटे करून संथ लयीत बोला. (बोबडं कधीच बोलू नका). बोलताना हातवारे करा, हावभाव करा, जेणेकरून त्यांना अर्थ समजायला सोपे होईल. गाणी आणि बडबड गीते, त्यांच्या बरोबर चित्र असलेली गोष्टींची पुस्तके वाचणे, असे उपक्रम करावेत. ह्यामुळे शब्दसंग्रह वाढतो. (ह्यात screen time चा उपयोग नसतो.)

मुलं स्पंज प्रमाणे सर्व शोषून घेत असतात. आणि मग 'हरकत नाही' 'मदत कर' असे कधी न वापरलेले शब्द वापरून तुम्हाला चकीत करतात. 

हेच सर्व दुसर्‍या भाषेबद्दल पण सार्थ आहे. मुलाला इंग्रजी येत नाही, इंग्रजी माध्यमाच्या शाळेत त्याचं कसं होणार? काळजी करायची गरज नाही. आजूबाजूला लोक इंग्रजीत बोलत असतील तर जितक्या सहज बाळाने मातृभाषा शिकली, तितक्याच सहज ते इंग्रजी शिकेल.

 

Linguists 

Babies are born linguists. Are you surprised by this sentence? But expose them to any one of the seven thousand languages of the world and they easily learn it. Even though nobody teaches them alphabets or grammar. 

After many experiments, scientists and linguists have realised that the method by which babies learn a language is quite different from that of adults. This ability to grasp a new language is retained till the age of six or seven. And if during this time the child gets exposed to a second language, this period gets extended. They would learn the second language in a similar fashion to the first language. 

By third month babies can focus their gaze. They can make eye contact with their caregivers and start responding by making gurgling sounds and making raspberries. 

By fifth month babies can join a vowel and a consonant. For example baba, mama, kaka etc. They also learn to use gestures. They would extend hands to say, 'pick me up '.

Eighth and nineth months are for jargon speech. They pick up tone and pitch of the adult speech, but words still elude them.

After this small sentences of two words are used. But by now they can combine their limited knowledge of language with gestures and convey what they want or don't want quite vehemently. 

They learn language by mimicry. They are all the time listening to the adults talking around them. They listen and store what they have heard and then try to use it at appropriate time. This is their way of learning a new language.

If you want to help them progress, then talk with them or around them slowly and in clear voice. (Never use baby talk with them.) Use gestures to emphasise the meaning of your words. Songs and rhythm helps them to remember words. Reading story books to your child helps to increase her vocabulary. Pictures in the books help further. (Remember NO screen time.)

Children are like sponges. They are mopping up everything around them. They suddenly surprise you by using new phrases like 'no problem' or 'help me'.

All this is also true for the second language. If your child doesn't know English and you enlist him in an English school, how will he cope? There is absolutely no reason to worry. If people around him are conversing in english, he will pick up that language as easily as he picked up his mother tongue.
